The 'BLACK' exhibition and campaign delves into the intricate and varied identity and culture of Black individuals residing in the Netherlands. By focusing on diverse voices, the exhibition aims to showcase their contributions to Black history, pride, and empowerment. This initiative actively works against the harmful notion that all Black people are homogenous in their experiences or beliefs, fostering a space that embraces individuality within the broader Black identity. The exhibition champions joy, empathy, justice, and community, inviting visitors to connect with and celebrate the multifaceted nature of Blackness in the Netherlands. The campaign officially began with an exhibition featuring photographic portraits of 33 Black Dutch individuals by Bete van Meeuwen, alongside a short film by Evani Gilds. These works explore the question, 'What does it mean to be Black in the Netherlands?' and offer insights into concepts of Black Joy and Black Empowerment. The exhibition was on display at The Black Archives / Vereniging Ons Suriname from November 5 to December 23, 2022. The Black Archives also extended an invitation to individuals from Black and African communities to share their stories and archival materials, further enriching the collective narrative.
Admission is FREE, with donations being welcome. A combiticket for the 'BLACK' exhibition and the 'Facing Blackness' exhibition was available for €10,- (ex. BTW & service costs). Student/Teenager/Senior tickets were €7.50, and children under 10 were free. Stadspashouders also had free entry.
