Curatorial context
H’ART Museum presents 'Het Land van Hagelslag. Building a new world together,' a debut exhibition in Amsterdam by the Congolese art collective CATPC. Running from May 22 to November 8, 2026, the exhibition showcases how everyday products like cacao, sugar, and palm oil often come with a significant human and environmental cost. The artists of CATPC use their art to drive change, with proceeds from their work being used to buy back exhausted plantation land for the creation of food forests, thereby strengthening food security, biodiversity, and the restoration of the sacred forest.
The exhibition features 30 unique sculptures cast from cacao, palm oil, and sugar, each conveying narratives of exploitation, inequality, and resistance. These works, originally sculpted from clay, utilize 3D technology to embody their powerful messages. Complementing the sculptures are a series of embroidered works that present portraits of resistance fighters and plantation workers from Congo, Haiti, Suriname, Indonesia, and Ghana. These portraits are embroidered onto burlap sacks, the very material used for transporting cacao globally, serving as a profound tribute to their shared struggles against colonial exploitation.
