This exhibition at De Nieuwe Kerk Amsterdam commemorated the royal inaugurations of seven generations of the House of Orange. It explored the history of these ceremonies, the development of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, and the relationship between the Oranje family and the church.

Curatorial context

The exhibition 'Ingehuldigd! De Oranjes en De Nieuwe Kerk' offered a unique look at the festive and solemn royal inaugurations that have taken place in De Nieuwe Kerk for seven generations of the House of Orange. Covering from Willem I to Willem-Alexander, the exhibition delved into the historical context of the Kingdom of the Netherlands and the enduring connection between the royal family and the iconic church. Central to the exhibition were significant loans from the Nationaal Museum Paleis Het Loo, including royal garments worn during recent inaugurations, alongside numerous historical objects from esteemed collections such as the Koninklijk Huisarchief, Rijksmuseum, Nationaal Archief, and Amsterdam Museum. The exhibition also featured archival footage from NOS. It presented the history through three narrative threads: the historical inaugurations, the origins of the Kingdom of the Netherlands and its relationship with the Oranje dynasty, and an audiovisual recreation of King Willem-Alexander's inauguration. Contemporary elements, including portraits and films of Princess Catharina-Amalia and her sisters, provided a modern conclusion. The historical church itself played a significant role, with its architectural elements like the stained-glass windows and the historic choir gate reminding visitors of its ceremonial importance.
