Curatorial context

Opening during WorldPride 2026, 'Queer Amsterdam, de roze stad' is a significant exhibition charting the eventful and unique history of Amsterdam's LGBTQIA+ community. It presents a cultural-historical narrative centered on love, exclusion, courage, struggle, and freedom, unfurling within De Nieuwe Kerk, a site that once symbolized religious doctrine and exclusion. The exhibition is developed in collaboration with the LGBTQIA+ community, marking 25 years since civil marriage was opened to everyone and celebrating 30 years of Pride Amsterdam and 80 years since the founding of COC. Despite Amsterdam's historical leadership in LGBTQIA+ rights, the exhibition also underscores the vulnerability of acquired freedoms. It acknowledges that a substantial part of the community continues to face discrimination and violence today. The exhibition aims to provide a nuanced perspective, celebrating progress while confronting ongoing challenges faced by the community.
