In 'Love & Death,' photographer Lowie van der Grinten presents an intimate and deeply personal series born from a profoundly significant year where love and death converged. The exhibition showcases a collection of black and white photographs characterized by their movement, high contrast, and rich texture. Van der Grinten intentionally relinquished control and styling, working purely from feeling to imbue the everyday with rawness and vulnerability. Some images offer clarity and proximity, while others induce a sense of alienation, shifting reality. Together, these works delve into themes of mortality, the transient nature of existence, and the primal fear associated with them, underscoring the inevitable connection love shares with these concepts. Van der Grinten's artist statement reveals that after nearly a decade in photography, these images emerged from a new way of seeing – capturing his own life and the lives of those around him. This approach allowed him to discover beauty in the ordinary. While he had been engaged in autonomous work, the images in 'Love & Death' were generated spontaneously, with the camera becoming an extension of his body. He deliberately let go of control and styling, making space for what he observed and felt. The creative process began tentatively in January 2025, with the final, decisive images being captured on December 31st, driven by a strong urge to document life itself: the people he loves, those facing mortality, strangers experiencing similar joys and sorrows, and the inseparable forces of love and death.
This exhibition is free to visit, and no tickets need to be reserved. Visiting hours are Thursday to Saturday from 1:00 PM to 8:30 PM, and Sunday from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM.
