Exhibition summary

An annual commemorative sunrise breakfast held at the Oude Kerk, marking the anniversary of Saskia Uylenburgh's burial. The event features a lecture by a Rijksmuseum curator on Saskia and Rembrandt's son Titus, a specially written poem, and musical performances.

Curatorial context

Each year on March 9th, the Oude Kerk hosts the 'Saskia Breakfast' to commemorate Saskia Uylenburgh, wife and muse of Rembrandt van Rijn, who was buried there in 1642. The event is timed to coincide with a ray of sunlight falling upon her grave at precisely 8:39 a.m. This year's edition includes a lecture by Friso Lammertse, Curator of 17th-Century Painting at the Rijksmuseum, focusing on Titus, the only child of Saskia and Rembrandt to survive childhood. The program also features a poem by City Poet Ellen Deckwitz and musical contributions from violinist Lisa Jacobs and titular organist Matteo Imbruno. The lives of Saskia Uylenburgh and Rembrandt van Rijn are deeply connected to the Oude Kerk. Rembrandt signed their marriage notice there in 1634, and the couple lived nearby. Saskia modeled for many of Rembrandt's works. She tragically died of tuberculosis in 1642 at the age of 29 and was interred in the Oude Kerk. This annual breakfast serves as a special tribute to her memory and her significant connection to the historic church.
