Exhibition summary

Saskia Ontbijt XL is a special morning event held at the Oude Kerk to commemorate the burial of Saskia Uylenburgh, Rembrandt's wife, on March 9th. The event includes a breakfast, a reading by the city poet, a lecture, and music, celebrating her life and connection to Amsterdam.

Curatorial context

On March 9th, 2025, the Oude Kerk will host 'Saskia Ontbijt XL', an expanded event to mark the burial of Saskia Uylenburgh, Rembrandt's wife, in 1642. The event centers around the annual moment when a sunbeam falls on her grave, an occasion celebrated with a special breakfast featuring Fries suikerbrood, a lecture, and musical performances. The program includes a reading by city poet Ellen Deckwitz, a lecture by Dorine Maat from the Amsterdam Museum about Saskia and the 'Vrouwen van Amsterdam – een ode' project, and performances by the improvisation choir August 38th and organist Matteo Imbruno. This event is part of the 'Vrouwen van Amsterdam – een ode' initiative, collaborating with the Amsterdam Museum, which seeks to highlight the often-untold stories of women who have made significant contributions to the city. Participants are invited to write their own ode to Saskia Uylenburgh, which will become part of the Amsterdam Museum's collection. The life of Saskia Uylenburgh and her husband, the painter Rembrandt van Rijn, is deeply intertwined with the Oude Kerk, where they signed their marriage contract and where Saskia was eventually buried at the young age of 29.
