Exhibition summary

The ARTIS Aquarium, dating from 1881, has undergone a comprehensive four-year restoration to ensure its future. The project focused on preserving the original architectural design while modernizing its infrastructure for sustainability and visitor experience, with a planned reopening in early 2026.

Curatorial context

The ARTIS Aquarium, originally built in 1881 and designed by architect Gerlof Salm, has completed a significant four-year restoration project aimed at future-proofing the iconic structure. The extensive work addressed severe salt damage caused by the water in the basins, which had permeated the masonry and affected finishes. The restoration has preserved the building's historical character while incorporating modern sustainable technologies, including solar panels, a WKO system (heat and cold storage), and self-healing concrete in some basins. The classic filtration system by Lloyd ensures a healthy environment for marine life. The project respected the original design while updating it to meet contemporary standards, bringing back historical colors and materials where possible. Following the symbolic handover of the keys, ARTIS is now focused on reintroducing aquatic life and developing an immersive experience that highlights the importance of clean, living water. Visitors will embark on a journey through oceans, lakes, and rivers, exploring themes of biodiversity, ecology, and the human connection to water, with each space dedicated to a different aspect.

Admission and ticket notes

The ARTIS Aquarium is undergoing a major restoration and is set to reopen in the first half of 2026. Details regarding tickets and admission for the reopening will likely be available closer to the date.
