Exhibition summary

This event features a screening of 'Oema Foe Sranan' (Women of Suriname), the first documentary about Suriname spoken in Sranantongo around its independence. The film follows four women resisting exploitation and poverty, highlighting the history of colonialism and racism. A complementary short documentary, 'STRIJD OP 16MM', about the making of 'Oema Foe Sranan', will also be shown.

Curatorial context

The event centers around a screening of 'Oema Foe Sranan' (Women of Suriname), a significant 1978 documentary filmed in Sranantongo. This film chronicles the struggles of four women—Jetty, Sonja, Somai, and Sylvie—as they confront marginalization, exploitation, and poverty. Through their personal narratives, the documentary sheds light on the historical impacts of (neo-)colonialism in Suriname and racism within the Netherlands. It draws upon quotes from Anton de Kom's seminal work, 'Wij slaven van Suriname,' to critique the exploitative role of the Netherlands and foreign corporations. The film's intent is to portray a people actively fighting rather than passively suffering, serving as a political statement of solidarity between Surinamese and Dutch individuals. The documentary was a collaborative effort by Cineclub Vrijheidsfilms and LOSON (National Organization of Surinamese in the Netherlands) and was restored in 2021 by Eye and the IISG. Accompanying the main film is 'STRIJD OP 16MM,' a new short documentary produced alongside the restoration of 'Oema Foe Sranan.' This shorter film documents the creation and exhibition of the often-underrepresented activist film, serving as an introduction to the main screening.
