Exhibition summary

The Black Archives, Anton de Kom Stichting, and Atlas Contact are organizing a writing competition inspired by the work and legacy of Anton de Kom. Participants are invited to explore themes of anti-colonialism, the legacy of slavery, and contemporary struggles against racism. Winning entries will be published in a book.

Curatorial context

The Black Archives, in collaboration with the Anton de Kom Stichting and publisher Atlas Contact, presents a writing competition that uses the profound thought and legacy of Anton de Kom as its central theme. De Kom, an anti-colonial thinker, resistance fighter, and author, dedicated his life to the fight against colonialism and fascism. His work, particularly 'Wij slaven van Suriname,' continues to inspire new generations, as evidenced by its resurgence in popularity during the #BlackLivesMatter protests. The competition is open to secondary school students and adults, inviting them to submit fiction or non-fiction pieces—essays, journalistic reports, or short stories—that reflect on de Kom's ideas, the colonial past, its enduring impact including institutional and anti-Black racism, and the spirit of anti-colonial struggle and solidarity. Submissions could be an outline (max. 750 words) or a completed story (max. 3000 words), with a deadline of March 31, 2021. A distinguished jury, including Mitchell Esajas (jury chair), Kathleen Ferrier, Raoul de Jong, Vincent de Kom, and Tessa Leuwsha, will select participants for a workshop (April-June) to refine their work. The winning stories, along with contributions from established authors, will be published in a book by Atlas Contact and The Black Archives, with winners announced and the book launched on October 1, 2021, marking the start of Black Achievement Month.
