Curatorial context

This event celebrates the launch of 'Verdronken vrijheid,' a book by journalist and photographer Phaedra Haringsma. The collection weaves together oral history, archival research, photography, and poetry to bring the stories of Suriname's inland communities to life, from Ma Pansa to the Brokopondo reservoir. It highlights the immense pressure faced by indigenous and tribal communities due to the appropriation and destruction of ancestral lands by multinationals for natural resource extraction. The book is a tribute to the rich culture and pride of the Saamaka people, one of Suriname's six Marron nations, while also shedding light on the darker aspects of their history and the ongoing challenges in the interior. The publication includes translations into Sranantongo by Denise Jannah and features poetry by Saamaka spoken word artist and environmental activist Noris Bannafoo, offering poetic context to the stories. The book launch event will feature a conversation with the author and speakers discussing the history and current realities of the Brokopondo region.
