This hybrid safe space session, held on Friday, September 30, 2022, at The Black Archives, focused on the critical topic of raising Black children empowered, antiracist, and free from colorism. Facilitated by Jillian Emanuels, known as 'De Instant Pedagoog', the event offered a platform for group discussions on practical strategies for navigating racism, microaggressions, and societal biases faced by Black children in contemporary society. Emanuels, who previously authored an essay on the subject for The Black Archives, highlighted the responsibility of Black parents in antiracist education and the importance of equipping children with the knowledge to understand and resist racism. The session, which was also accessible online, served as a space for Black parents from the African diaspora to share experiences and best practices. It was organized in conjunction with an action research project on anti-Black racism in Amsterdam and supported by the municipality of Amsterdam. Participants were encouraged to visit the 'Facing Blackness' exhibition beforehand, which features a section on stereotypes in children's literature and toys, further contextualizing the discussions on childhood and identity. The event aimed to foster a safe and open atmosphere for these sensitive yet vital conversations.
