Curatorial context

For the first time, ARTIS-Groote Museum invited a guest curator, Humberto Tan, to create a new exhibition titled "Through the eyes of Humberto Tan." Tan was granted access to ARTIS's private depot, from which he selected objects from the natural history collection to pair with his own photographic work. The exhibition delves into his deep connection to and enthusiasm for nature, particularly focusing on the rich biodiversity of South America and Suriname. Tan's curatorial vision is presented in two main sections. In the West Hall of the Groote Museum, he shares his perspective on South America and Suriname, emphasizing the vital importance of the Amazon rainforests. His selections from the depot include fascinating specimens like morpho butterflies, the nine-banded armadillo, and a spectacled caiman, which he juxtaposes with his compelling photography of the continent, notably a series featuring macaws. The East Hall shifts focus to the Netherlands, where Tan highlights the beauty of nature found close to home. Through this exhibition, ARTIS aims to share Tan's sense of wonder and knowledge about the natural world, hoping to inspire visitors with his infectious amazement.
