Almere, a city celebrating fifty years of existence, was constructed on land that was once sea. Lacking ancient ruins or centuries-old legends, the exhibition 'Uit het niets' (Out of Nothing) aims to provide the city with its own set of myths. Seven artists have been commissioned to create new narratives for this unique location, delving into what once lay beneath the water and the very nature of myth-making. The exhibition questions what beings, forces, or events define a city's identity, drawing parallels to why humans believe in mermaids or monsters: because stories enrich the world and allow us to imagine possibilities beyond mere reality. Curated by Ellis Kat, who emphasizes that landscapes carry their own stories, 'Uit het niets' invites visitors to reconsider Almere through a lens of both fact and imagination. The exhibition argues that fantasy does not replace reality but enhances its meaning. The participating artists include Anders Dickson, Carmen Schabracq, Daniel Dmyszewicz, Marnix van Uum, Müge Yilmaz, Natalia Papaeva, Roberta Petzoldt, and Wessel Verrijt. The exhibition is presented by Jij bent M., an organization that creates art experiences rooted in space, context, and inspiration, marking its new home at Kunstlinie.
Tickets for 'Uit het niets' are available for purchase. General admission to Kunsthal is €12.50. Visitors with a Museumkaart or those aged 17 and under can enter for free.
