The Van Eesteren Museum showcases 'Nieuwelingen - In Transit', an exhibition dedicated to emerging talent from the urban peripheries of Amsterdam, specifically Nieuw-West, Noord, and Zuid-Oost. Featuring works by 15 artists including Bobby Beltz, Yfke Bijer, Laura Bouman, Muhcine Ennou, Layla Gijsen, Megan Hadfield, Daddy Hands, Thom van Hoek, Romain Perez, Victoria Hoogstoel, Ruben Tevreden, Gerrit Rietveld Designlab students o.l.v. Oscar Peters, Sam Oswin Vonk, Veldboom Studios, and Slow Moving Collective.
The artists' practices often revolve around mobility, both literally and figuratively, as they navigate their careers, develop their work, and operate in areas where living and workspaces can be temporary. For this generation, car ownership is not a given, but mobility is a recurring theme. In this eclectic exhibition, they investigate the significance of the car for their generation, considering it as an educational tool, a vehicle that relativizes time and space, and a symbol that influences themes such as the housing crisis, innovation, personal reflection, and escapism.
The exhibition delves into diverse perspectives on subjects like the housing crisis, personal reflection, innovation, space, and the potential for artists to transcend the art world. Alongside the artworks, the exhibition highlights the creative process and underlying research, recognizing that significant development often arises from these areas. This exhibition is curated by Tobias Krasenberg in collaboration with assistant curator Asuka Kondo.
