Unruly Process is the first retrospective exhibition of architect, designer, and researcher Afaina de Jong. The exhibition highlights her multidisciplinary practice by showcasing two decades of projects, installations, and research that challenge traditional, patriarchal, and colonial structures within architecture.
Unruly Process serves as the first retrospective of architect, designer, and researcher Afaina de Jong. Since establishing her studio, AFARAI, in 2005, De Jong has centered her practice on untold stories and marginalized communities, using her work to interrogate and redefine the conventions of traditional architecture. The exhibition captures her approach as an ongoing, non-linear process of creating, learning, and sharing knowledge, while marking her residency as the first Van Eesteren resident of 2026.
Throughout the exhibition, visitors can explore a diverse selection of De Jong's work, ranging from large-scale installations and maquettes to furniture and research documentation. Featured projects include 'The Multiplicity of Other' from the Venice Biennale (2021), her exhibition design for the Rijksmuseum's 'Slavery' exhibition, and the 'Kinship Library' sculpture for the NDSM-werf. Rooted in a feminist perspective and inspired by Black communities, her work serves as an invitation to engage with physical presence, shared expertise, and the collective building of wijdvertakte (widely branched) communities.
