This solo exhibition by Ivna Esajas, winner of the ABN AMRO Art Award 2025, showcases her work at the intersection of drawing and painting. The exhibition delves into themes of interconnectedness, history, and diverse experiences of Blackness, structured as a call-and-response between different makers.
Ivna Esajas, the recipient of the ABN AMRO Art Award 2025, presents her solo exhibition, 'Wayward Lines. Consent Not To Be a Single Being.', at the Stedelijk Museum. Esajas's practice operates fluidly between drawing and painting, where figures merge and form connections, exploring themes of fragility, resilience, and interconnectedness. Her work poetically questions our relationship to history and invokes a spirit of call-and-response among different artistic voices.
The exhibition is conceived as two complementary parts, 'Consent Not To Be a Single Being' and 'Wayward Lines,' mirroring the A and B sides of an LP. This structure examines joint authorship and ownership, creating a space for multifaceted perspectives on the lived experience of Blackness, grounded in everyday life, intergenerational knowledge, and constant contextual evolution. The exhibition was curated by Amal Alhaag, and its themes are inspired by myths, personal stories, Black feminism, science fiction, literature, and everyday life, building a poetic and balanced universe in constant motion.
