The exhibition 'Zwarte Beweging #BlackLivesMatterNL' delves into the origins and impact of the global #BlackLivesMatter movement, with a specific focus on its presence and significance in the Netherlands. Initiated by a hashtag following the acquittal in the Trayvon Martin case, the movement evolved into a global force for change. In the summer of 2020, over 60,000 people across the Netherlands participated in demonstrations, including significant gatherings on Dam Square in Amsterdam and in Nelson Mandelapark, Amsterdam-Zuidoost. These protests expressed solidarity against anti-Black police violence in the US and specifically addressed systemic racism within the Netherlands. The exhibition highlights that racism, particularly anti-Black racism rooted in centuries of slavery and colonialism, remains a structural issue in the Netherlands. It commemorates 147 years since the abolition of slavery in Dutch colonies and showcases a continuous history of resistance and emancipation. Photographer Mona van den Berg contributes 147 portraits of individuals actively engaged in Black emancipation, alongside works by AiRich and Leonel Piccardo (in collaboration with Naomie Pieter of Black Pride), which visualize various forms of resistance, movement, and emancipation among Black Dutch communities.
