Curatorial context

The "Moneda Itálica Fundida" exhibition at the Museo Casa de la Moneda presents a collection of 539 cast bronze coins from the Italic region, considered the most important of its kind globally. This significant acquisition, bolstered by the 'Colección Fallani,' merges with existing museum holdings to offer a comprehensive look at ancient coinage. The exhibition traces the evolution of monetary systems from the earliest "Aes Rude" (formless bronze fragments measured by weight) and "Aes Formatum" (bronze money shaped like objects) to the "Aes Signatum" (stamped ingots) and finally the Roman "As" and its denominations like the Decussis, Quincussis, Tressis, and Dupondios. These pieces primarily originate from Republican Rome and various peoples in the central Italian peninsula, with emissions dating back to the 3rd century BC and earlier, found in settlements across Etruria, Umbria, Apulia, and central/northeastern Italy. The collection offers a unique insight into a crucial period in ancient history and universal numismatics, with plans for advanced museographic support including 3D digitalizations of key pieces.
