Curatorial context

The Firefighters Museum of Madrid presents an exhibit on the auxiliary hose reel cart, a vital piece of equipment introduced in 1886. These carts were designed to efficiently transport 100-meter hoses to firefighting sites. Ten guard posts were established throughout the municipality, each equipped with living quarters and staffed by three individuals (two firefighters and a driver) who rotated every 24 hours. The primary duty of these teams was to transport the cart to the nearest water source for hose connection at the scene of a fire. Although officially retired in 1913 following the acquisition of motor vehicles by the City Council, these hose reel carts continued to be utilized in fire brigades until the 1930s, illustrating the gradual transition in firefighting technology.
