Curatorial context
The House-Museum of Lope de Vega hosts Vataria Teatro's production, 'Las tres vidas de Cardenio.' This performance invites audiences on a journey centered around Cardenio, a character intertwined with the creative universes of Lope de Vega, William Shakespeare, and Miguel de Cervantes. Cardenio's tale, that of a lover abandoned and betrayed, fleeing into madness from an unfaceable reality, served as inspiration for Cervantes in several passages of his 'Don Quixote.' The character also made a profound impression on Shakespeare, who, after encountering the 1612 translation of 'Don Quixote,' penned a comedy titled 'The History of Cardenio,' offering his own interpretation and deepening the young man's conflicts with his beloved Lucinda. Through Cardenio, the performance establishes a literary game rich in theatre, humor, and poetry.
