This exhibition explores the evolving themes of collective housing in 21st-century Europe, showcasing built projects and conceptual categories. Curated by Carmen Espegel, Andrés Cánovas, and Jose María de Lapuerta, it offers a reflection on the present and future of our living spaces.
The exhibition 'Amaneceres Domésticos. Temas de vivienda colectiva en la Europa del siglo XXI' delves into the primary themes shaping collective housing across Europe in the 21st century, featuring a selection of constructed works. Curated by Carmen Espegel, Andrés Cánovas, and Jose María de Lapuerta, the exhibition aims to foster reflection and debate on the present and future of residential spaces. This presentation is the result of extensive research by the GIVCO research group, building upon their catalog of approximately 2,500 collective housing buildings constructed in Europe between 2000 and 2021, as documented in the book Housetag. The exhibition synthesizes these findings into 28 exemplary cases, organized around seven core categories: Climate consciousness, Active recharging, Domestic care, New management, Urban contexts, Living and sharing, and Iconic identities, with an additional epilogue dedicated to COVID-19's impact. These categories highlight fundamental concepts in the new habitability standards being developed in early 21st-century European collective housing, encouraging forward-thinking discussions.
The curatorial team, affiliated with the Collective Housing Research Group (GIVCO) and supported by the Directorate-General of Architecture, Housing and Land of the Ministry of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda (MITMA), has undertaken a significant synthesis of their research for this exhibition at the Museo ICO. This effort, in collaboration with Fundación ICO and MITMA, aims to present a comprehensive overview of contemporary European collective housing. The exhibition's objective is to illustrate the essential concepts driving innovation in how we live collectively, thereby promoting continued progress in the field of housing.
