Curatorial context

The exhibition 'Balkrishna Doshi. Arquitectura para todos' (Balkrishna Doshi. Architecture for All) makes its Spanish debut at the Museo ICO, featuring the most extensive retrospective of the Pritzker Prize-winning Indian architect's career to date. This project, originating from the Vitra Design Museum and the Wüstenrot Foundation in collaboration with the Vastushilpa Foundation, delves into Doshi's profound seven-decade professional journey where architecture, research, teaching, and a deep social commitment are inextricably linked. The exhibition begins with a full-scale recreation of Sangath, Doshi's own studio designed and built in 1980. It is structured into four thematic and typological blocks, presenting plans, models, drawings, paintings, and large-scale accessible installations of his most iconic buildings. Visitors can observe how Doshi, influenced by early collaborations with Le Corbusier and Louis I. Kahn, forged a distinct architectural language by adapting Western modernism to the specific local conditions and vernacular building traditions of India. His contributions were particularly vital in post-independence India, addressing critical issues through visionary projects in affordable housing, urban planning, and social, educational, and academic institutions, many of which he founded and managed.
