Curatorial context

The exhibition "PABLO PALAZUELO. LA LÍNEA COMO SUEÑO DE ARQUITECTURA" provides an in-depth look at the career of the renowned Spanish painter, sculptor, and printmaker, a leading figure in 20th-century geometric abstraction. For the first time, the exhibition showcases a curated selection of his works and projects that illustrate the intense relationship established between architecture and his artistic output. The exhibition is structured into nine thematic sections, guiding visitors from Palazuelo's formative years and initial influences through to his furniture designs for domestic settings and large-scale works conceived for urban environments. It also features pieces emphasizing references to labyrinths, passages, enclosures, boundaries, and stained glass. A total of 12 artworks and 12 projects, including drawings, sketches, watercolors, models, and sculptures from the Fundación Pablo Palazuelo, are on display, many of which remained unpublished until their cataloging by the exhibition's curators. The exhibition is co-curated by Teresa Raventós-Viñas and Gonzalo Sotelo-Calvillo, whose doctoral thesis on Palazuelo's geometry from the perspective of an architect served as a foundation for the exhibition's conceptualization. Sotelo notes the striking similarity between Palazuelo's creative method and architectural project methodology, particularly his use of transparent sketch papers for layering and developing ideas, a technique learned during his early architectural studies in Oxford. The exhibition has been made possible through the support of the Fundación Pablo Palazuelo, as well as loans from the Colecciones ICO, Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, and Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza.
