This exhibition showcases drawings and sculptures from the ICO Collections, offering a journey through 20th-century art. It highlights the dialogue between line and volume across various social, political, and aesthetic changes until the 1980s, featuring works from early avant-gardes to contemporary artists.
The Museo ICO's annual program begins with 'Transitar el siglo XX. Dibujo y escultura en las Colecciones ICO', an exhibition that pays homage to the institution's origins by displaying a selection of its foundational art collection. Curated by María Toral, the exhibition provides an essential survey of 20th-century art, illustrating how the languages of line and volume have engaged with the era's social, political, and aesthetic transformations. Running until May 10th, the show features works by thirty-four artists, including sculptors and architects, created from the early 20th century up to the 1980s.
The exhibition integrates sculptures with a curated selection of drawings, fostering a dialogue between these two artistic languages and offering insight into the artists' creative processes. The recorrido spans from the early 20th-century avant-garde movements, such as Cubism, represented by artists like Julio González, Pablo Picasso, and Juan Gris, through to key figures in Spanish art including Carmen Laffón, Eduardo Chillida, and Jorge Oteiza, and extends to contemporary artists like Miquel Barceló and Susana Solano. This comprehensive display illuminates the evolution of form, space, and materials, moving from the delicate nature of paper to the substantial presence of sculptural matter.
