Exhibition summary

This exhibition at the Reina Sofía presents 'HU/هُوَ. Bailad como si nadie os viera', a site-specific installation by filmmaker Oliver Laxe. It explores themes of transcendence, divine breath, and the sacred in nature and sound through multi-sensory elements.

Curatorial context

The exhibition 'HU/هُوَ. Bailad como si nadie os viera' is a new installation conceived for the Museo Reina Sofía by the Galician filmmaker Oliver Laxe, inaugurating a programming line dedicated to exhibition-based film projects. Drawing inspiration from his film 'Sirāt', the work investigates the concept of 'HU/هُوَ', the primordial sound of the divine, and the Persian mystic Rūmī's verse on dancing freely. The installation unfolds across two rooms, beginning with a sonic immersion from a rave-ecosystem speaker pyramid, akin to ancient temple preparation chambers, before confronting viewers with projected desert landscapes, architectural forms, and dancing figures. Laxe employs abstract visual and sonic language, with sound design by Kangding Ray, to evoke an interreligious experience and a re-enchantment of the world, emphasizing the spiritual and contemplative dimensions of his artistic practice through a physical, sensory, and synesthetic approach.
