Curatorial context

As part of the three-year 'Cuadernos de campo' program, which documents the natural spaces of the Royal Sites, this exhibition presents the third edition featuring photographer Isabel Muñoz. Her project, 'Las piedras del cielo' (Stones of the Sky), focuses on the Royal Monastery of San Lorenzo de El Escorial and the La Herrería forest, examining how these sites were designed by Philip II to reflect a cosmic order, connecting human ambition with divine revelation. Muñoz employs a multidisciplinary approach, utilizing photography, objects, video, and installations to move beyond the traditional still image. Her work highlights the geological and cultural significance of local granite and the surrounding landscape, framing stone as a threshold between historical time and the human endeavor to create meaning. The project emphasizes the importance of preserving natural environments as essential cultural legacies.
