Curatorial context
The exhibition 'Mar, pequeña inmensidad' (Sea, small immensity) was a collaborative project between visually impaired artists Víctor Meliveo and Aida Fortuny, held at the Museo Tiflológico from December 2, 2021, to January 15, 2022. The exhibition served as a dialogue between the artists, employing a variety of techniques including mural drawing, digital photography, and video art. These diverse formats and spatial intentions aimed to create an immersive experience for the viewer, conditioned by a mixed and different poetics. The artists, both described as 'Mediterranean' (Meliveo born in Málaga, Fortuny in Barcelona), used the sea as a central figure, representing its emotional, magical, all-encompassing, or perhaps empty nature, embodying the concept of a 'small immensity'.
The exhibition featured over 40 images, a sound art piece with video, and a large-format, super panoramic charcoal work. Visitors were invited on a physical and conceptual journey through different states of water, exploring its relationship with humanity and its proximity to abstraction. This collection brought to Madrid the idea of the maritime, the intangible, and the immeasurable. A significant aspect was the large-format mural drawing, created over eight days using tools like brooms, sponges, and cloths to smudge charcoal powder onto the wall, progressively building the imagery of waves, water, and sky. The artistic processes of both Aida Fortuny and Víctor Meliveo are deeply intertwined with their personal experiences, including their visual impairments, shaping their unique approaches to figuration, abstraction, and the exploration of beauty through art.
