Curatorial context

Located in the authentic basement spaces of Kačina Chateau, the 'Service Quarters of the Chateau' exhibition offers a glimpse into the essential activities that sustained aristocratic life. Visitors can explore distinct areas such as the chateau laundry, complete with boiling cauldrons and equipment, and the ironing room featuring nineteenth-century mangles and irons. The original cellars have been renovated to showcase their past functions, including wine storage, preservation of fruits and vegetables, and the ice room, which was historically used for meat storage. Undoubtedly, the highlight is the chateau kitchen, which, despite retaining only a stone sink from its original setup, features a faithful replica of the bread oven combined with a cooking stove, a chimney for smoking meats, kitchen furniture, and a wide array of dishes and implements. Adjacent rooms include a pantry and a storage room for kitchenware. The exhibition also includes the living quarters for cooks and a woodshed. All reconstructions are based on inheritance lists of the Choteks and use surviving objects and nineteenth-century museum collection items, respecting the original use of each space. This exhibition complements the representative salons on the ground floor, offering a comprehensive view of both 'upstairs' and 'downstairs' life in an aristocratic home.
