Curatorial context

The Sallač Collection at NZM Ohrada presents a remarkable assembly of deer antlers and bovid horns, gathered by Professor Vilém Sallač in the early twentieth century. The collection is of international importance and includes approximately 400 items, specifically 430 deer antlers and 60 bovid horns. The new exposition, completed in 2013 with support from the Forests of the Czech Republic, displays all species and sub-species of deer in the collection along with a sample of bovid horns, totaling 77 exhibits. Among the rarest items are the antlers of Schomburgk’s deer, a species that became extinct in Thailand during the first half of the twentieth century, as well as valuable antlers from South American deer such as huemul, pudú, brockets, the marsh deer, and the pampas deer. Each exhibited antler and horn is accompanied by informative plaques. These plaques feature color photographs of the living animals, their descriptions, and maps indicating their natural range, providing visitors with comprehensive context for each specimen. The project ensures that this significant natural history collection is presented in an engaging and educational manner.
