Museum of King Jan III's Palace at Wilanów, Warsaw

The Wilanów Palace was opened to the public as a museum in 1805 by its owners, Stanisław Kostka Potocki and Aleksandra Lubomirska, establishing it as one of the first public museums in Poland.

The palace's collection originated with King John III Sobieski, who gathered works of art and everyday objects. Though only a fraction of his collection remains, it included notable pieces and formed the basis for later additions by subsequent owners.

Following World War II and under the Communist agrarian reform which transferred the estate to the state, extensive revitalization works on the palace and park began in 1954. This effort preceded the museum's reopening.

After post-war renovations and revitalization, the palace officially reopened as a branch of the National Museum, Warsaw, on September 10, 1962, making it accessible to the public two days later.

In the years following its 1962 reopening, the museum and its gardens saw a significant increase in popularity, attracting as many as 400,000 visitors per year.

In 1983, the museum organized a special jubilee exhibition titled "Glory and fame of John III in art and literature" to commemorate the 300th anniversary of the Battle of Vienna.

In 1995, the Palace Museum at Wilanów was established as an independent entity, no longer a branch of the National Museum, and came under the authority of the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage.

In September 2013, the museum underwent a renaming and officially became known as the Museum of King John III's Palace at Wilanów.

The museum's collection features paintings by renowned European artists such as Lucas Cranach the Elder, Peter Paul Rubens, Jan Lievens, Pompeo Batoni, Angelika Kauffmann, and Anton Graff, enriching the historical holdings.

Among the collection's most prized paintings is the 'Portrait of Count Stanislas Potocki', created in 1781 by the artist Jacques-Louis David.

Beyond paintings, the collection encompasses European and Polish goldsmithery, ceramics, crafts, objects from the Far East, ancient artifacts like a red-figure amphora, and royal memorabilia such as Queen Marie Casimire Sobieska's dressing table.

Following the Second World War, a significant portion of the museum's collection, which had been stolen by Nazi Germany, was successfully repatriated.
