Warsaw Rising Museum: Commemorating the 1944 Uprising

The institution that would become the Warsaw Rising Museum was established in 1983. However, construction work on the museum did not commence for many years.

The Warsaw Rising Museum officially opened its doors to the public on July 31, 2004. This date was chosen to coincide with the 60th anniversary of the Warsaw Uprising.

The museum actively supports research into the history of the Warsaw Uprising and the Polish Underground State. It also collects and preserves hundreds of artifacts, from weapons to personal letters, to provide a comprehensive depiction of those involved.

Key objectives of the museum include establishing an archive of historical information related to the Warsaw Uprising and recording the personal stories and memories of its living participants.

The current director of the Warsaw Rising Museum is Jan Ołdakowski. He works alongside Dariusz Gawin, a historian from the Polish Academy of Sciences, who serves as his deputy.

The Warsaw Rising Museum is a member organization of the Platform of European Memory and Conscience, an organization focused on commemorating and investigating the totalitarian regimes of the 20th century.

The museum's exhibitions encompass the entirety of the Warsaw Uprising, featuring photographs, audio-visual materials, interactive displays, artifacts, and personal accounts that illustrate life during the German occupation, the uprising itself, and its aftermath.

The Kino Palladium within the museum is a small cinema that continuously screens original footage filmed by insurgents in 1944. This footage was used to create newsreels shown during the uprising.

The museum includes replicas of Warsaw sewers on both the mezzanine floor and in the basement. These provide visitors with an experiential understanding of how sewers were used for movement during the uprising.

A dedicated hangar within the museum houses a full-size replica of a B-24 Liberator aircraft, a significant element related to the historical context of the uprising.

A room dedicated to the print shop displays original typewriters and printing equipment that were utilized to produce underground newspapers during the German occupation of Warsaw.

On the ground floor, a large cinema presents a reconstructed film compilation of newsreels from the period. The film concludes with Chopin's Prelude in D Minor, Op. 28 no. 24.

The museum features an observation tower, providing visitors with panoramic views of the city of Warsaw from the top of the building.

The adjacent Freedom park includes over 30 posters with colorized photographs from the uprising, a replica of the insurgent-manufactured Kubuś armored car, and remnants of a statue of Józef Poniatowski destroyed by the Germans.

A memorial wall, described as the heart of the museum, is inscribed with thousands of names of the fallen and features the 'Monter bell'. It also emits sounds of battle and heartbeats.

The museum provides souvenir shops for visitors, with one located inside the main building and another situated in the ticket office area.

The Warsaw Fotoplastikon, a 1905 stereoscopic theatre used by the Polish underground, is preserved and operated by the Warsaw Rising Museum as an external branch located at 51 Jerusalem Avenue.
