Praga Museum of Warsaw: A Deep Dive into District History

The Museum of Praga, a local museum in Warsaw, Poland, was established in 2006. It is a branch of the larger Museum of Warsaw and is situated in historic buildings.

The museum is housed in a complex of three historic tenement houses at 50/52 Targowa Street. One of these buildings, the Rothblith House, is noted as the oldest surviving brick residential building in the Praga suburb, dating back to the 18th century.

In 1996, fragments of wall paintings dating from before World War II were discovered in an annex of the Rothblith House, which had been a Jewish prayer house. These unique polychromes, depicting Zodiac signs and religious scenes, are believed to be the only ones of their kind preserved in the Mazovia region.

Initially, a collection of Praga memorabilia was gathered at temporary headquarters, including photographs, everyday objects, clothing, toys, furniture, and recorded testimonies from residents, forming an 'Oral History Archive'.

The renovation and construction of the museum's permanent location faced significant delays, pushing the opening from an initial 2010 target to 2014 and then 2015. The project was more complex and expensive than anticipated due to the poor condition of the buildings and the discovery of 18th-century cellars.

During the renovation, only the outer walls of the tenement houses were preserved, with internal metal structures and floors supported by columns. The three buildings were connected, maintaining their different floor levels, and now house museum exhibitions and facilities.

The concept for the museum's permanent exhibition, decided in December 2013, was praised for its innovation but also criticized for potentially reinforcing stereotypes, presenting the community schematically, and showing ignorance of local history.

The Museum of Praga, with its permanent exhibition, officially opened its doors to visitors on September 19, 2015, after several years of planning and construction.
