York Castle Museum is preparing to transport visitors across more than two centuries of holiday traditions with its upcoming seasonal celebration, "A Very Yorkshire Christmas." Running from 15 November 2025 through 4 January 2026, the museum invites guests of all ages to explore historical festive customs through period decor, live music, and hands-on activities.
Experiencing Historic Holidays on Kirkgate
The museum's famous recreated Victorian street, Kirkgate, serves as a central hub for the festivities. Adorned with twinkling garlands, decorated trees, and a layer of snow over the cobblestones, the street evokes a classic Dickensian atmosphere. Visitors can browse vintage holiday objects in the shop windows and enjoy traditional carol performances every Monday.
Throughout the season, Green Father Christmas will appear on select days to share winter tales, traditional games, and songs, offering families a chance to take a photograph in the Kirkgate sleigh. Meanwhile, the recurring "Sunday Sounds" program will fill the galleries with festive tunes played on historical instruments by musicians such as Paul the Historical Musician and the Ran Tanners.
Centuries of Seasonal Rooms and Kitchens
Beyond the Victorian street, the celebratory footprint spans multiple eras. Guests can peek into period rooms to see how 17th- and 18th-century homes prepared for winter, or check out familiar holiday items in the 1940s and 1960s spaces.
For those interested in historic culinary traditions, the Castle Kitchen will host live baking demonstrations on select days, focusing on Tudor and Georgian mince pie recipes complete with recipe cards and occasional samples.
Special Performances and Adult Evening Events
The holiday lineup features several specialized theatrical and evening performances. A one-man adaptation of A Christmas Carol featuring Scrooge runs on select Fridays and Tuesdays, alongside an evening performance on 10 December that includes mulled wine, mince pies, and musical accompaniment. Additionally, a new adult-focused evening event, "Ghost Stories for Christmas by Edwrydian Tales," takes place on 14 December, reviving traditional winter storytelling customs.
Families and younger visitors can enjoy interactive storytelling sessions with Storycraft Theatre and puppet friends on Tuesdays, or drop in for a Christmas card printing workshop hosted by Thin Ice Press.
