York Castle Museum is turning its focus toward the history of childhood and play, offering visitors an immersive seasonal lineup. The upcoming holiday programming blends historical recreation, hands-on family activities, and sensory exhibits across the historic former prison site.
Family Activities and Retro Play on the Recreated Street
The seasonal schedule features interactive experiences designed to transport visitors across multiple eras. In the Castle Kitchen, scheduled cooking demonstrations will highlight historic school dinner favorites—such as jam roly-poly, chocolate concrete, and cornflake tarts served with pink custard—complete with recipe cards for visitors to take home.
Meanwhile, visitors can step into a Victorian classroom on Kirkgate for structured physical education lessons led by the museum’s schoolmasters.
