Step Back in Time: Victorian Galas and Swinging 60s Summers at York Castle Museum
York Castle Museum is bridging the gap between centuries for its upcoming seasonal programme, contrasting the atmosphere of nineteenth-century festivals with the energy of the 1960s. Running from 22 June through 6 September 2026, the exhibition explores the concept of the classic summer holiday through immersive installations, period decor, and hands-on activities spanning social history.
Experiencing Historic Victorian Galas in York
Drawing on the heritage of the city's historical summer festivities—which began with the inaugural York Gala in June 1859—the museum is transforming its spaces to evoke a nineteenth-century celebration. Visitors can step into an immersive coaching inn arrival created by Novo Theatre, titled the ‘Last Stop Before Kirkgate’.
The experience extends onto Kirkgate, Britain's oldest recreated street, which will be adorned with seasonal bunting and floral displays. Collaborating with Field Studios, the museum has introduced updated soundscapes and projections to simulate a dynamic day-to-night cycle across the street's historical shopfronts.
Creativity remains a core focus of the seasonal exhibits. The nearby Green Room is undergoing a transformation, featuring suspended paper-cut hot air balloons crafted by Yorkshire artist Pippa Dyrlaga. Starting on 25 July, visitors can also participate in guided paper-craft workshops running on Saturdays throughout August to add their own creations to the display.

Moving forward in time, the programme also celebrates the vibrant culture of the 1960s, a pivotal decade marked by creative growth and the establishment of the University of York.
