Experiencing Victorian Coaching Life at York Castle Museum This February Half-Term
Visitors planning a trip to York Castle Museum can step back into the nineteenth century this season with a major new theatrical installation and a packed schedule of living history events. Running from Saturday 14 February to Sunday 22 February 2026, the seasonal programme transforms the approach to one of the museum's most iconic exhibition spaces.
Stepping Into a Recreated Victorian Coaching Inn
The main highlight of the half-term schedule is a collaborative project with Novo Theatre titled The Last Stop Before Kirkgate. Opening in the final week of January and running through 22 February 2026, the bespoke installation reimagines the visitor gateway to Kirkgate, the museum's famous re-created Victorian street.
The immersive experience invites guests to explore the sights, sounds, and personal narratives of nineteenth-century travel. Soundscapes and character voices—such as a traveling seamstress—bring to life the atmosphere of historic coaching inns that once lined streets like Coney Street in York. Visitors can view authentic elements such as a large park drag coach, mounting steps, and architectural archways, alongside an original sign from the historic Black Swan coaching inn.
Culinary Demonstrations and Family Activities
Beyond the theatrical gateway, the visitor experience extends into traditional foodways and hands-on creativity. The museum's Castle Kitchen will host scheduled demonstrations of nineteenth-century coaching inn recipes—including classic soups, lemon blancmange, and spotted dick puddings—on select days during the half-term week.
Families can also take advantage of the Creative Studio near the Secrets of Dress exhibition to sketch Victorian-inspired outfits. A special guided Creative Families workshop led by artist Lendita is scheduled for Friday 20 February 2026. Other seasonal offerings include live historical performances during Sunday Sounds, daily talks by the Visitor Experience Team covering the history of Kirkgate and York Castle Prison, and an interactive Time Travellers Trail for younger visitors.
