York Castle Museum has officially welcomed the festive season, transforming its galleries to showcase centuries of seasonal traditions ranging from the 17th century through to the 1980s. Visitors stepping into the social history museum can experience a packed programme of winter events designed to highlight how past generations celebrated the holidays.
Festive Atmosphere on the Recreated Victorian Street
The museum's much-loved recreation of a Victorian street, Kirkgate, serves as the centerpiece for the seasonal shift. The snow-covered thoroughfare has been lined with sweet-scented fir trees, creating an immersive, Dickensian atmosphere for visitors exploring the historic period rooms.
This year’s display is made possible through a collaboration with Moor Lane Farm Christmas Trees, a local business that supplied the street's fragrant greenery. Among the highlights is a magnificent 16-foot Nordman Fir, which stands proudly on the cobblestones adorned with traditional baubles and Victorian-inspired paper decorations.
Supporting Local Heritage Through Community Partnerships
The partnership highlights the vital role that local enterprises play in supporting cultural institutions. Operated by founders Mikey, Louis, and Debbie—who began growing the business as teenagers—Moor Lane Farm provided hands-on support by overseeing the installation of the grand fir tree ahead of the opening.
Organisers note that community backing is essential for the venue. As a charity, the York Museums Trust relies heavily on visitor admissions, charitable donations, and local partnerships to maintain its prison buildings and extensive social history collections.
