The comprehensive image was meticulously assembled from 8,439 individual photographs, each measuring 5.5cm x 4.1cm. Researchers utilized a 100-megapixel Hasselblad H6D 400 MS-camera, and artificial intelligence played a crucial role in stitching these smaller images together to create the massive 5.6 terabyte final file. This technological feat ensures that even the most minute aspects of The Night Watch are visible in sharp focus.
The Science Behind the Gigapixel Achievement
Creating this incredibly sharp image presented significant challenges. The depth of field for each individual photograph was a mere 0.125mm. To maintain focus across the painting's entire surface, the research team first employed lasers to scan the artwork, followed by precise camera calibration. After each photograph was taken, a neural network automatically checked the image for color accuracy and sharpness. This rigorous process allowed the scientists involved in Operation Night Watch to study the painting remotely in greater detail than ever before, enabling them to track subtle aging processes and identify pigment particles with enhanced accuracy.
What to Expect During The Night Watch's Conservation in Amsterdam
The publication of this ultra-high-resolution image comes as the second phase of Operation Night Watch begins on January 19, 2022. During this period, the front of The Night Watch will be temporarily out of view as conservation work takes place. The initial task involves mounting the painting on a new stretcher to address existing deformities in the canvas, particularly ripples observed in the upper left corner. While these issues require immediate attention, they are considered manageable and are not expected to impact the painting's long-term future. Following this, further conservation treatments will be carefully evaluated. Thanks to the new gigapixel image, the public can continue to admire Rembrandt’s masterpiece in intricate detail, even while it undergoes restoration.
