Rijksmuseum Amsterdam Explores Ed van der Elsken's Legacy in New Exhibition
The Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam is set to unveil "Ed van der Elsken. Up Close," an exhibition dedicated to the influential Dutch street photographer. Running from June 19 to September 13, 2026, the presentation offers a comprehensive look at Van der Elsken's groundbreaking work, inviting visitors to experience postwar Netherlands through his distinctive lens.
This exhibition draws on years of research into the artist's private archive, revealing new perspectives on the creation of his iconic images. Alongside many familiar photographs, the display will feature a significant collection of previously unreleased notes, contact prints, darkroom experiments, and newly discovered book dummies. Materials have been gathered from various institutions, including the Rijksmuseum itself, the Nederlands Fotomuseum, the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, Leiden University Libraries, and film footage from the EYE Film Museum.
A Deep Dive into Ed van der Elsken's Vision
Visitors will discover how Ed van der Elsken consistently pushed boundaries and explored innovative techniques to articulate his unique view of the world. Taco Dibbits, General Director of the Rijksmuseum, highlights that the exhibition provides a surprising and thorough understanding of Van der Elsken's thought process, intentions, and working methods. The nine galleries trace key moments throughout his career, from his initial work as a photojournalist in the 1950s to the creative journey behind his final photobook in the late 1980s.
Unearthing a Private Photographic Archive
The research behind "Ed van der Elsken. Up Close" was made possible by the 2019 acquisition of Van der Elsken’s private archive by both the Rijksmuseum and the Nederlands Fotomuseum. This pivotal acquisition allowed for an unprecedented in-depth study of his materials, which are now presented alongside works from other public collections.
The detailed examination of his artistic process reveals a versatile and inventive visual artist who profoundly impacted photography in the Netherlands. It illustrates his dedication, sometimes spending years on a single project or book, some of which were never published but carefully preserved and are now making their debut. The exhibition is further enriched with film clips that include the photographer's own voice, offering a more intimate connection to his work and travels, including trips to Cuba and Japan. These elements shed light on his evolution, inspirations, and technical approaches.
