Subsequently, any remaining older varnish is carefully lifted using cotton swabs under a microscope. This method is the result of years of scientific investigation, including extensive tests on The Night Watch itself and application to other artworks.
The current restoration follows five years of intense preliminary research as part of 'Operation Night Watch.' This multidisciplinary project has involved a vast team of specialists, including conservators, curators, and scientists, utilizing advanced technologies from digital imaging to artificial intelligence.
