Rijksmuseum Amsterdam Launches New Research into Diverse Histories
The Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam is embarking on a new research initiative focused on exploring historically underrepresented subjects within its extensive collection. This effort, which includes a specific focus on queer history, aims to provide more complete narratives and fresh insights from the museum's holdings, spanning the Middle Ages through the 20th century.
This new program is made possible through the continued support of Baker McKenzie, which is extending its long-standing partnership with the museum. Their contribution facilitates the appointment of a dedicated researcher and supports a related public program designed to share these new findings with a wider audience. The director of the Rijksmuseum, Taco Dibbits, highlighted the importance of continuous research to offer diverse perspectives and ensure the museum remains deeply connected to society. Kim Tan, managing partner of Baker McKenzie Amsterdam, also emphasized their commitment to fostering inclusion by investing in research that uncovers new and underrepresented stories.
Discovering Diverse Stories: Rijksmuseum's Public Programs
In conjunction with the research, the Rijksmuseum will host various activities, particularly during WorldPride Amsterdam, which runs from 25 July to 8 August. These events, supported by Baker McKenzie, are designed to engage visitors with the themes of diverse histories and representation.
A notable offering is the guided tour titled "A Pink History." This tour will delve into the representation of queer history within Dutch art, showcasing stories from hidden affections to open celebrations of diversity.
Additionally, on Friday 24 July, the museum will host a special evening event dedicated to WorldPride Amsterdam. This program will feature films and panel discussions where various speakers will discuss the significance of positive representation, diverse storytelling, the power of solidarity, and moving beyond traditional categories.
Continuing a Valued Partnership
The collaboration with Baker McKenzie dates back to 2007. Over the years, their support has significantly enhanced the Rijksmuseum's collection, particularly in 20th-century photography. This partnership has enabled the acquisition of over 375 photographs by renowned international artists such as Moholy-Nagy and William Klein, helping the museum develop a leading photography collection. Baker McKenzie’s patronage has also made several exhibitions possible, including the 2017 "StarVu" and the upcoming "American Photography" in 2025.
