Rijksmuseum Announces Plans for New Eindhoven Museum Branch
The renowned Rijksmuseum, in collaboration with the Municipality of Eindhoven, has announced plans for a new museum branch in Eindhoven. This initiative aims to expand the accessibility of the Rijksmuseum's world-famous collection to the southern regions of the Netherlands. ASML, a leading technology company, has been named a founding partner and is expected to contribute significantly to the establishment of this new cultural facility.
The planned Rijksmuseum Eindhoven is envisioned as a dynamic space that will offer exhibitions from new perspectives, emphasizing creativity and craftsmanship. It will be situated within a green area along the Dommel River, conveniently located near Eindhoven's main train station.
Expanding the Rijksmuseum's Cultural Footprint
This new museum in Eindhoven represents a significant step for the Rijksmuseum in its mission to share its extensive collection nationwide. The institution has historical ties with Eindhoven, including a 25-year partnership with Philips. With ASML joining as a key partner, the project aims to establish a leading cultural destination.
Taco Dibbits, General Director of the Rijksmuseum, highlighted the importance of making art accessible to all and expressed enthusiasm for this expansion. Jeroen Dijsselbloem, the Mayor of Eindhoven, welcomed the project as an "incredible opportunity" to enhance the cultural landscape of Brabant and the rapidly developing Brainport region. Christophe Fouquet, CEO of ASML, noted that the new museum would strengthen Eindhoven as both a cultural destination and a desirable place to live and work.
Location and Future Development
The new museum is designed to be a vibrant meeting point, reflecting the distinct character of the Rijksmuseum. With plans for a building spanning more than 3,500 square meters, detailed designs are set to be developed in the coming year. The aspiration is to open the Rijksmuseum Eindhoven within six to eight years.
Its strategic location along the Dommel River, within a new city park, ensures easy access for both local residents and visitors from across the Netherlands and internationally, being just a short walk from Eindhoven Central Station.
A Glimpse into the Collection
As the national museum for art and history, the Rijksmuseum narrates 800 years of Dutch history within an international context. The Eindhoven branch will showcase artworks from this expansive collection, which includes masterpieces by artists such as Rembrandt, Vermeer, Frans Hals, and Rachel Ruys. The collection spans over a million objects, encompassing paintings, sculptures, decorative arts, textiles, photographs, and Asian art. This expansion will allow the Rijksmuseum to increase the visibility of its collection and make these artistic and historical treasures available to a broader audience.
