Rijksmuseum Amsterdam Presents Duurzaam/Sustain/Tene, Exploring Sustainability Across the Netherlands
The Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam is currently hosting a new photography exhibition, Duurzaam/Sustain/Tene, which delves into the critical theme of sustainability. Running from September 23, 2022, to January 15, 2023, the exhibition is located in the museum's Photography Gallery and features the work of photographer Sharelly Emanuelson. Visitors have the opportunity to explore a unique visual journey through the Netherlands and the six Dutch Caribbean Islands, examining the intricate balance between human activity and the natural environment.
Exploring Sustainability Through Daily Life
Commissioned as part of the Rijksmuseum's annual "Document Nederland" project, Sharelly Emanuelson's work assesses the impacts of climate change on everyday life. Her photographs capture a range of scenarios, from large-scale waste treatment operations to small, individual efforts like the creative reuse of PET bottles. Emanuelson’s intention is to prompt reflection on what society values and what might need to be re-evaluated in terms of environmental stewardship. The exhibition is structured around various themes, each highlighting human actions related to issues such as water management, erosion, and waste processing, showcasing their diverse and often lasting consequences.

The Document Nederland Legacy
Duurzaam/Sustain/Tene is the latest installment in the Rijksmuseum's long-standing "Document Nederland" series. Initiated in 1975, this annual project commissions a Dutch photographer to visually document a relevant social issue, contributing to an extensive photographic archive that chronicles significant moments and societal shifts in the Netherlands from the late 20th century to the present day.
Engaging Young Voices: Document Nederland Junior
Coinciding with Emanuelson's exhibition, the Rijksmuseum also presents Document Nederland Junior. This photography competition encourages secondary school and college students, including participants from the Dutch Caribbean Islands for the first time, to engage with contemporary themes. The 2022 competition, themed "A Second Life: How Do You Recycle?", showcases the work of ten nominated young photographers. These nominees receive masterclasses from Sharelly Emanuelson and museum experts, with their creations on display as part of the wider exhibition experience at the Rijksmuseum. More information on the youth program can be found here.
