Rijksmuseum and Mizuno Launch Limited Edition Sneakers Inspired by Vermeer's Milkmaid in Amsterdam
The Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam has announced a distinctive collaboration with global sportswear brand Mizuno, introducing a limited edition range of sneakers inspired by Johannes Vermeer’s renowned masterpiece, The Milkmaid. This partnership brings together Dutch art history and modern design, offering two unique sneaker models that celebrate the iconic painting and the city's active culture.
The collection includes a lifestyle sneaker, the Contender Vermeer, and a specialized running shoe, the Wave Rider 27 Amsterdam, which also serves as the official shoe for the upcoming TCS Amsterdam Marathon. This initiative highlights the intersection of cultural heritage and contemporary style, making art accessible in new and wearable forms.
Art Meets Lifestyle: The Mizuno Contender Vermeer
The Contender Vermeer model draws directly from the subtle elegance of The Milkmaid. The design incorporates understated colors and intricate details reflecting elements within the painting. References include the distinctive blue fabric worn by the milkmaid and patterns from the Delftware cupid tiles visible in the artwork. A print of The Milkmaid adorns the shoe's tongue, while the insoles offer a deeper dive into the painting’s nuances. The left insole highlights the precise gesture of the milk pouring, capturing the painting's solitary movement, and the right insole celebrates the rich colors of the milkmaid’s attire.
This limited edition Contender Vermeer is available for both men and women. Interested visitors can find them at the Rijksmuseum shop and through the official Mizuno website (www.mizuno.com), with a recommended retail price of €140.
Celebrating the Amsterdam Marathon: Mizuno Wave Rider 27
For those who combine their appreciation for art with an active lifestyle, the collection also features the Mizuno Wave Rider 27 Amsterdam. This model, an updated version of Mizuno’s versatile running shoe, is lighter than its predecessors and boasts uppers made from 90% recycled materials. Designed for daily runs, endurance, and high-speed interval training, it includes a MIZUNO ENERZY midsole for enhanced cushioning and energy return.
The Wave Rider 27 Amsterdam also holds a special significance as the official shoe for the TCS Amsterdam Marathon 2023, an event Mizuno has sponsored for 24 years. This running shoe is available for men and women at the Rijksmuseum and online at the Mizuno website (www.mizuno.com), priced at €164.95. The marathon is scheduled to take place on October 15, 2023.
