New WORN Exhibition at Rijksmuseum Amsterdam Highlights Valued Garments
The Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam is set to unveil a new exhibition titled "WORN: Clothing to Cherish," inviting visitors to explore the rich history of garments that have been worn, mended, and lovingly preserved over centuries. Opening its doors from March 27, 2026, until March 21, 2027, "WORN" showcases 24 pieces of clothing and accessories spanning from 1640 to 1930. Vanessa Jones, the museum's Curator of Costume and Fashion, noted that the practice of reusing and mending clothing was historically commonplace, driven by considerations of craftsmanship, economic necessity, and sentimental attachment.

Visitors are encouraged to take a close look at each exhibit, observing the subtle details that reveal the life of these garments. Signs of wear, intricate repairs, visible darning patterns, softened fabrics, and even traces of perspiration tell a compelling story of continuous use and careful preservation.
Among the items on display is a 19th-century dress made of blue taffeta with an intricate woven pattern. This piece demonstrates how clothing was frequently altered; its skirt could be paired with multiple bodices depending on the occasion. One of these bodices was repeatedly disassembled and re-stitched, extending the garment's lifespan significantly.
Another notable example is a yellow floral gown belonging to the Six family. What appears to be an 18th-century exterior cleverly conceals a 19th-century interior. The dress was worn by different generations in 1896 and again in 1925, with internal adjustments like a modern corset with steel boning made to suit contemporary styles and wearers.
