Rijksmuseum Amsterdam Presents 'WORN: Treasured Clothing' Exhibition
The Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam is set to open a new exhibition, "WORN: treasured clothing," inviting visitors to explore the rich history of garments that have been cherished, altered, and reused over centuries. Opening on 27 March 2026 and running until 21 March 2027, this display focuses on the intricate details of wear, repair, and the craftsmanship embedded in fashion. The exhibition features a selection of 24 garments and accessories, spanning from 1640 to 1930, each telling a unique story of endurance and value.
Discovering the Enduring Legacy of Fashion
This intimate presentation highlights how clothing has been valued and re-worn throughout history, whether for its skilled craftsmanship, economic necessity, or deep emotional significance. As costume and fashion curator Vanessa Jones notes, "WORN reveals that wearing vintage and second-hand garments has a long history." The exhibition encourages a close, slow look at each piece, revealing the delicate repairs, patterned darns, subtle signs of use, and even traces of daily life, all of which illustrate how these items were treasured and meticulously preserved across generations.
Stories of Adaptation and Renewal
Among the exhibits, a 19th-century blue taffeta dress exemplifies how garments were transformed over time. Originally featuring a skirt with interchangeable bodices for different occasions, one bodice was repeatedly adjusted and reassembled to extend the dress's lifespan.
Another compelling example is the citrine-yellow floral dress from the Six family. Initially an 18th-century piece, its interior structure was later modified in the 19th century. Subsequent generations continued to wear the dress in 1896 and again in 1925, with further adaptations including the integration of a modern corset with steel boning, showcasing its remarkable journey through fashion trends and family history. Also on display are 17th-century mules with rich embroidery, which were evidently worn and valued over a long period.
Part of the Special Collections Series
"WORN: treasured clothing" is a continuation of the Rijksmuseum's "Special Collections" series, which annually features new displays from its extensive and diverse costume collection. The exhibition's design has been crafted by the French architectural firm Wilmotte & Associés, enhancing the visitor experience of these historical treasures.
