Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam Extends Acclaimed Erwin Olaf – Freedom Exhibition
The Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam has announced an extension for its highly successful Erwin Olaf – Freedom exhibition, allowing visitors more time to experience the acclaimed retrospective. Originally set to conclude on March 1st, the exhibition will now run until Monday, April 6th, 2026, coinciding with Easter Monday. This decision comes in response to overwhelming public interest since the exhibition opened on October 10th.
This extensive tribute marks the first major retrospective since the artist's passing two years ago. The exhibition showcases a broad spectrum of Olaf's work, from his iconic series to lesser-known videos and sculptures. Notably, many pieces, including his final creations, are being presented to the public for the first time, offering a comprehensive look at his artistic journey.
Visitor Experience and Critical Acclaim
The exhibition has garnered exceptional praise, with visitor surveys indicating an impressive rating of 9 out of 10. Attendees have described the experience as "overwhelmingly beautiful," "fantastic," and "phenomenal," praising the comprehensive portrayal of Olaf's artistic development.
Critical acclaim has mirrored public enthusiasm, with Dutch newspapers like NRC and De Volkskrant both awarding the exhibition four stars. NRC noted that the exhibition "invites us to look again," while De Volkskrant stated that Olaf’s work "acquires a stamp of eternal value" through this presentation. De Telegraaf also hailed it as a magnificent retrospective.
Rein Wolfs, Director of the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, highlighted the consistent interest. "When we announced the exhibition a year before its opening, we already saw enormous interest. We've noticed that Erwin Olaf is missed both personally and as an artist. Immediately after the opening on October 10th, there was a huge influx of visitors, and that hasn't stopped. It's wonderful to see that interest in his work is so vibrant," he stated.
Engage Further: 'Freedom Now' Debate
In conjunction with the extended exhibition, the museum will host a debate titled Freedom Now: The Art of Activism, Then and Now. This event, scheduled for Saturday, March 28th, 2026, from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM in the auditorium, will delve into art's role in exploring and defending freedom, a theme central to Olaf's work.
The discussion, held in Dutch, will bring together young activists, human rights representatives, and the public to examine themes of emancipation, resistance, and responsibility across generations. The debate explores what values were at stake in the past and which freedoms require defense today. Admission to the debate is €3, in addition to standard museum entry.
The Erwin Olaf – Freedom exhibition was organized by the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam and curated by Charl Landvreugd, in collaboration with Studio Erwin Olaf and Marcel Schmalgemeijer. Generous contributions from Fonds 21 and the VandenEnde Foundation made the exhibition possible.
This extension offers a valuable opportunity for those who have not yet seen this significant collection. To discover more about cultural events and exhibitions like this one, explore museums in Amsterdam or browse what's on on Musemap (musemap.art).
