Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam Presents Major Kho Liang Ie Retrospective
The Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam is set to host a significant exhibition dedicated to the influential designer Kho Liang Ie, a pivotal figure in Dutch design from the 1950s to the mid-1970s. Titled "Kho Liang Ie – Mid-Century Modernist," this retrospective marks the first major museum showcase of his work in over five decades, offering visitors a comprehensive look at his enduring impact on furniture and interior design. Visitors can explore Kho Liang Ie's diverse oeuvre at the Stedelijk Museum from May 14 to October 18. The exhibition features more than 200 objects, including his iconic sofas, chairs, cabinets, and lamps, many of which are considered Mid-Century Modern classics still in production or sought after by collectors. International Recognition: Kho Liang Ie Honored in Milan
Ahead of the Amsterdam exhibition, Kho Liang Ie's work will be celebrated at the 10th edition of Masterly – The Dutch in Milano, part of the prestigious Salone del Mobile. Furniture manufacturer Artifort and tile manufacturer Mosa, both of whom collaborated extensively with Liang Ie, will host a special presentation. This tribute highlights the importance of timeless design, showcasing how Liang Ie’s pieces, such as those from Artifort, lend themselves to sustainable practices like reupholstering. The presentation will also feature Mosa tiles from the Classics Kho Liang Ie Collection. New Publication Delves into Kho Liang Ie's Impact
An accompanying publication, also titled "Kho Liang Ie – Mid-Century Modernist," will make its debut in Milan before its wider release. This book represents the first monographic study since 1986 and notably includes color images, illuminating the significant role color played in Kho Liang Ie's designs. Beyond historical context, the publication explores the contemporary relevance and appreciation of his work, featuring a photo series of his designs in people's homes. Edited by Ingeborg de Roode and designed by Beukers Scholma, it includes contributions from several authors.
