Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam Launches "Supersize Stedelijk" Project for Schools in Amsterdam
The Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam is introducing "Supersize Stedelijk," an innovative educational initiative designed to bring modern and contemporary art directly to school playgrounds across the city. This project offers pupils a unique opportunity to engage with the museum's collection in a highly interactive and creative way.
A Creative Approach to Art Education
"Supersize Stedelijk" combines structured classroom learning with hands-on art activities in the schoolyard. Students are first introduced to prominent artists from the Stedelijk's collection, including renowned figures like Karel Appel and Yayoi Kusama, as well as artists such as Marcel Pinas, who contribute diverse perspectives. Following this, pupils collaboratively recreate a selected artwork as an expansive chalk drawing. This process allows them to actively explore elements of color, form, and scale, fostering discussion and enabling them to add their own creative interpretations to the piece.
The program aims to introduce children to modern and contemporary art at an early age, demonstrating that art can be a playful, surprising, and connective experience. By moving beyond passive viewing to active creation, the Stedelijk seeks to enrich children's understanding of what art can be, exposing them to various artists, stories, and viewpoints.
